Reformation Day - 489th Anniversary

On this day, October 31, in 1517, Martin Luther posted a list of 95 theses on the castle church door in Wittenburg, Germany. The church door served as the town bulletin board, being central to the main thorough-fare.

By posting these theses Luther was calling for an open debate of the doctrine and practice of the sale of indulgences. Needless to say this act stirred up flames that effected a period of unprecedented reformation in the church.
Luther is not considered to be the first voice of reform, however, his boldness, skill in the Word, and the availability of printing presses were used of God to due a mighty work in the Church. Along with Luther (1483-1546), we must also consider the other Reformers such as John Wycliffe (c. 1320-1384), John Huss (1369-1415), Girolamo Savonarola (1452-1498), Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531), Hugh Latimer (1485-1555), Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556), Martin Bucer (1491-1551), William Tyndale (c. 1494-1536), Philip Melancthon (1497-1560), Nicholas Ridley(c. 1500-1555), Heinrich Bullinger (1504-1575), John Calvin (1509-1564), John Knox (c. 1514-1572), Theodore Beza (1519-1605), and others.
