Theology of the Psalms

The following is a list of works on the theology of the Book of Psalms. Kraus and McCann are standard works on the theology of the Psalms, but I would recommend the conservative student to begin with Geoffrey Grogan's Prayer, Praise and Prophecy: A Theology of the Psalms. He admits that this is not a complete theology of the Psalms, but I have found this to be a very thorough and accessible volume. Grogan holds to a high view of Scripture and conservative dating of the Psalms. I purchased my copy after reading a recommendation of it by Dr Michael P. V. Barrett and have not been disappointed.

Under each post is a list of sources of recommendations. Some titles have a link, or reference to a review of the book.

Disclaimer: The inclusion of a title in this list does not indicate a full endorsement of its theological perspective and/or content by the contributors to this blog. Titles included are recommended by various authorities (as noted) and should be read and used with much prayer and Biblical discernment.

  1. I read Grogan after reading Barrett, and was not disappointed. My eyes were opened to many lessons from the Psalms, and I greatly appreciated his devotional comments. It was very accessible, informative, and spiritually challenging, and I highly recommend it.

  2. Kraus and Patrick Miller are on my "short list".

Also, I have received a review copy of a new theological commentary by Geoffrey Grogan. This is in the Two Horizons series published by Zondervan and is fantastic. I plan on commenting on it in a separate post, soon.

  3. Grogan's book look interesting and has now been added to my "I plan to read soon list". It seems to be ever growing!

Futato's commentary on the Psalms should be released this year so I am looking foward to that. Up until recently Critical scholarship has really been the most refreshing IMO but at least evangelical scholarship has begun to catch up.

Thanks for your comments on my blog. I have had to strike a balance between providing the best articles which not everyone may be able to access and providing some good articles that all can access. Nothing worse than finding a list of superb articles to discover that you can't actually read them!!

If you write a review let me know and I will link to it.
