List of Contributors:Publisher's Description: Readers of the New Testament often encounter quotes or allusions to Old Testament stories and prophecies that are unfamiliar or obscure. In order to fully understand the teachings of Jesus and his followers, it is important to understand the large body of Scripture that preceded and informed their thinking. Leading evangelical scholars G. K. Beale and D. A. Carson have brought together a distinguished team of scholars to provide readers with a comprehensive commentary on every quotation, allusion, and echo of the Old Testament that appears from Matthew through Revelation. We were not able to obtain a review copy of this new resource published by Baker Academic but here are a few links that should prove helpful in considering this book.
- Dr Jim Hamilton (SWBTS) submitted a review to 9Marks Ministries. Hamilton concludes,
This new Commentary will establish its place among those reference works that every student and teacher of the Bible will constantly consult. There is simply nothing else like it, which augments the quality of the work done by the contributors and editors. Careful readers of the Bible will praise God for the help they receive from this book, and may the idea that we should not pattern our exegesis of the Old Testament after the method exemplified for us by Jesus and his apostles be dismissed to that place of darkness whence it came. (Read his full review here.)
- Andy Efting at Unsearchable Riches - A very positive and appreciative review. Andy says...
This present volume, edited by Drs Beale and Carson is a virtual goldmine for those of us interested in studying this subject and especially individual passages. (Read his review here).
- Ben Wright at PaleoEvangelical - Ben's post sparked a very helpful conversation between a handful of bloggers including Dr Craig Blomberg, a contributor to this commentary. If you're considering purchasing this volume, please read this post, ESPECIALLY THE "PONTIFICATIONS" (ie. comments).
- Jake Hunt at Wiser Time - An informative and positive review. Jake concludes...
This book is a great reference for preaching and teaching, and even for personal Bible study. Having it on your shelf will help you ask and answer hard questions of the Bible, and minimize the times when you shrug your shoulders and move on without understanding what you just read. It shows the organic way in which God inspired the Scriptures, and it helps us to be honest in our interpretation of both the OT and NT. (Read his review here).
- This book made Andreas Köstenberger's Best Book of 2007 list.
- The folks at Hearts & Minds Books (Dallastown, PA) have written a very nice introduction to this book by surveying other recent studies on the NT use of the OT. Read their article here.
- Russell D. Moore of The Henry Institute lists this among his Top Good Books From a Good Old Year. He comments,
"This volume is a brilliant help for pastors and other leaders to understand that if you are not seeing how all the promises of God find their "Yes" in Jesus in any given passage of Scripture, you are not listening."
- Chad Knudson at The Emmaus Road listed this at the top of his Top Ten Books of 2007.
- Kim Riddlebarger, at Riddleblog, listed this at #2 on his list of the Five of the Best Books of 2007.
