A New Bible Translation

A new Bible translation is in the planning stages. See here.
From the ournewbible website:

A new ecumenical Bible translation is coming. We promise that this version will provide:

  1. Clarity of language, as in "plain speaking"
  2. A reliable, genuine, and credible power to transform lives
  3. An emotional expectation to find the love of God
  4. A rational expectation to find the knowledge of God

The name of this new translation will be disclosed soon. The Bibles produced from this translation will be developed with a special emphasis on education and worship in congregations. More information.

  1. What caught my eye was the desire for the translation to use "language that is more engaging emotionally than precise."

Yikes! This looks like a disaster in the making to me. They should call it the PMV, the Post-Modern Version.

  2. Yes, I'm all for continued translation work, but this one seems to be headed in a problematic direction. The statement you noted caused me to raise my eyebrow, too.

I wonder if this is just another way of speaking of dynamic equivalence or if they are seeking to go beyond that into a paraphrase.

  3. They don't really go into their translation philosphy but what they do say doesn't sound like anything with which I am familiar. I don't know if I could categorize it as either dynamic equivalence or paraphrase. The emphasis on emotion seems to be a very odd concept to strive for in a translation. Couple that with the decidedly liberal/ecumenical nature of the project, and well, I don't hold out much hope for this being a very useful translation.
