These are great posts and I'll not attempt to duplicate them. I will simply admit that I have a lot to learn about the issue of poverty. I have participated in a number of outreaches to the poor, but until recently I had never visited a homeless mission. Last Thursday I visited The Friendship Mission in Montgomery, AL. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit with the people there. I was given a tour and heard a number of stories about how the Lord has continued to provide for needs. I also met a number of the men who live at the home. It was especially wonderful to meet a few men who have come to know Christ as their Lord and Savior and who are faithfully assisting in the work of the mission.
Tomorrow, I will have the opportunity to return and preach the Gospel to those who gather for the noon meal. I have been praying about this all week. I am wrestling with some of the issues mentioned in the articles listed above. The Lord is teaching me!
A part of my message will cover Luke 17:11-19 -- Jesus Cleanses Ten Lepers. I have always marveled at the fact that Jesus did not interrogate the ten lepers in order to determine their sincerity; but, rather, he sent them all away and they all were cleansed. The Gospels show that this was characteristic of Jesus' ministry. He knows the hearts of men, yet he heals and feeds many who never believe in him. If Jesus dealt with the poor in this manner, should not we do the same?
I am resolved to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ through my words and deeds and to trust God to bring the increase.
