I'd like to know which commentaries in this series you have used and would recommend to me. O'Brien's commentary on Hebrews is the latest release (March 2010) and it is drawing a good bit of attention around the blogosphere. I've heard many times that Carson's is a "must have" on John. What about the others?

Jason, I am using Peterson in conjunction with a SS class that I am teaching on Acts. I've found him to be very helpful. I would also suggest O'Brien on Ephesians and Moo on James.
ReplyDeleteAnd speaking of Mark, an other book that I have taught through, I think that R.T. Frances's commentary is the hands down best treatment. I don't agree with all of his positions but the overall content was very enlightening.
Andy,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments on Peterson, O'Brien and Moo. Thanks also for mentioning R.T. France on Mark. I've got my eyes on buying both France's commentary and Lane's commentary on Mark. Most sources I've checked and people I've spoken with have mentioned William Lane's as being "the best."
Have you also used William Lane's commentary? I'm wondering if France offers more grammatical help.
Lane is good, too. What I liked about France was how he connected all the events in Mark to its overall theme and the insights he had regarding how each sections fit together. In short, he helped me see what Mark was doing with his gospel. And he is very thorough.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I don't recall who had the best helps grammatically.
That's good to know. This is why Guelich has been helpful to me. His commentary in the WBC series is also great. The format of the WBC series is sometimes cumbersome, but Guelich does a fantastic job identifying Mark's purpose and then fitting each portion into that overall purpose. You've got my interest piqued to see how France does this.
