The Book as Friend

"It's Alive!" is a great essay on the "animated" book by Gillian Silverman posted today in The New York Times.  Check it out here.

Just a few days ago I was explaining my view of my library as a place where I can study and learn from friends and teachers through their written works.  Some would be better characterized as philosophical or theological rivals, and I get to read them in a non-combative atmosphere gleaning from the variety of their perspectives.

In her essay, Silverman strings together a number of great quotes about the "animation" and "companionship" of books.  I really like the quote from Bronson Alcott, "Books are 'living friends...the more life embodied in the book, the more companionable.'"
