Here are some brief notes on books I have recently read.
I used Anthony Selvaggio's A Proverbs Driven Life to teach a Sunday School class in Clayton, AL and it proved to be very useful. Selvaggio does a fine job of hitting the high points, tying in the New Testament and keeping the content manageable. As much as I appreciate this book, I am left with the wish that there was more interaction within the book of Proverbs. Key texts are discussed but there is nothing close to a biblical theology of each topic within the book. Slimming down the chapters in order to create a couple more for each topic would have been helpful, as would a study guide with questions. All in all, using this book has provided a platform for some excellent discussions.
We use Derek Thomas's Let's Study Revelation for our Sunday School class at Trinity. Thomas does a good job at keeping the study to the larger, gospel-picture rather than muddling in the details. This study and the discussion was the best we've ever had in the book of Revelation.
This is an excellent primer on mercy ministry, short term missions, and even helping a friend or a stranger. I am learning so much and am looking forward to the Helping Without Hurting seminar on November 11, 2011 in Montgomery, AL. Please watch this video.
