Our library (Charleston County Public Library) sells hardbacks for $3 and softbacks for $.50 each.
I came away with about 25 books for about $50. I had a blast.
Not all that I found were classic, conservative authors. I did find a decent copy of Matthew Henry's one-volume commentary. (If it's a useful book at a great price I buy it so that I can pass it along to someone else.) I also found another copy of AT Robertson's Harmony of the Gospels.
I found some key books by a number of liberal (neo-orthodox, or whatever you want to call them) scholars. I prefer not to pay full price for their works, so it's great to find them for next to nothing.
- Jesus: An Historian's Review of the Gospels by Michael Grant (Scribners, 1977).
- Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography by John Dominic Crossan (Harper Collins, 1994).
- Jesus: A Life by A.N. Wilson (WW Norton & Co., 1992).
- Rabbi Jesus: And Intimate Biography by Bruce Chilton (Doubleday, 2000).
- Jesus Through the Centuries by Jaroslav Pelikan (Harper & Row, 1987).
- A Life of Jesus by Edgar J. Goodspeed (Harper & Row, 1950).
- Liberating the Gospels: Reading the Bible with Jewish Eyes by John Shelby Spong (Harper Collins, 1996).
- Paul and Palestinian Judaism by E.P. Sanders (Fortress, 1989).
I also found a copy of The Interpreter's One Volume Commentary.
I also found a book on Bonhoeffer, C.K. Barett on 1st Corinthians, a three-volume PB edition of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, Max Lucado's Come Thirsty, a commentary by Barclay, and Lockyer's All the Apostles.
My wife and kids got some books too! :)
So, don't forget to check out your public library's book sale.
