Early Arrival: The Cradle, the Cross, and the Crown: An Introduction to the New Testament

Yesterday afternoon, the UPS man stopped in front of the house with a package. To my delight is was an early copy of The Cradle, the Cross, and the Crown: An Introduction to the New Testament by Andreas J. Köstenberger, L. Scott Kellum and Charles L. Quarles (B&H Academic, August 2009). I would like to thank Jim Baird, VP of Marketing and Sales, for giving me the opportunity to announce and review this title for our readers.

While I give it a closer look, I recommend that you read through, or at least, browse through the sample chapter.
"An all-new comprehensive introduction to the New Testament,
paying close attention to the historical, literary, and theological
dimensions of the biblical text."

I also recommend watching the three video interviews posted on the B&H Academic website (here).

  1. This looks to be a good NT introduction. I'm reading the sample chapter now. Thanks for posting this.

  2. I had the opportunity to preach Sunday morning at the mission and wanted to give an overview of the Book of Ephesians. I read through the section on this epistle in CC&C and found some great help. Their theme and outline is a bit different from Minnick's, but I think that they make a convincing argument for their conclusions. They identify the theme as "Summing up all things in Christ" (I'm going from memory here, but that's pretty close). They identify Eph. 1:9-10 as the thematic statement for the epistle. Acc. to this, Minnick's theme would fall underneath this umbrella as sub-theme.

Do you remember the theme Minnick gave to us?

  3. I thought I had his theme statement written down, but I only have Eph. 3:21 marked as the theme. If I remember correctly, he said the theme of Ephesians concerns what God is doing in the church through Christ Jesus to glorify Himself forever. Does that sound right?

  4. As I remember it, he stated the theme as such: "What the Father is doing by Christ in the church for His own glory forever."

I think that this is pretty good, but I'm not sure why there is no mention of the Spirit. I wonder if I am not remembering it correctly. This letter is thoroughly and forthrightly Trinitarian.
