Sinclair Ferguson on Reading Good Books

This past weekend I had the opportunity to visit First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, SC and sit under the preaching ministry of Dr Sinclair Ferguson. The auditorium was packed (both main floor and balcony) with all age groups. The singing was traditional and hearty, and every aspect of the liturgy drew our attention to the great Triune God.

Dr Ferguson preached a Christ-centered message from Genesis 32:1-32, entitled "All Night Wrestling." I can't speak for anyone else there, but I must say that I needed that message. (Here is a link to the First Pres. Sermon Archive.)

While there I took a look at their book rack. On it, I found a Banner of Truth booklet written by Dr Ferguson entitled Read Any Good Books? This is very short, 32 page booklet filled with basic instructions for profitable Christian reading. The book reminded me of Dr Mark Minnick's book talk, "Bring in the Books" at the Whetstone Conference (part 1, part 2, part 3). Both of these, together, have been a great help to me. Now we need to find a publisher to print up a booklet of Dr Minnick's notes. (Tim, maybe we could get you to put a bug in Dr Minnick's ear. What do you think?)

Anyway, please add this little booklet to your next book order. It will greatly repay you, and it's very affordable! [CBD | Amazon]

  1. I think printing Pastor Minnick's session would be a good thing. He's had some of his sermons printed in booklets. His "Bring the Books" would make an excellent, handy resource.

BTW, I have Ferguson's booklet. It is good. I'll have to make a trip to Columbia soon. I've never heard him preach, but I've profited from several of his books.

  2. I just remembered; I have an autographed copy of Ferguson's book Deserted by God? No, I've never met him. I got it used at Booklovers. Read it twice. It's great.

  3. Autographed!!?? That's very nice. I saw that title on their book rack and wanted to pick it up, too, but my stack of books to read is getting out of hand. I'm doing more collecting than reading :|

It may be worth while to compile of list of Ferguson's published works. I've read his work on The Holy Spirit and have read portions of Know Your Christian Life. Both of these have been excellent.

  4. I'm not familiar with the title Know Your Christian Life, but I've read his book The Christian Life: A Doctrinal Introduction. It's very good. Is this a different edition of the same book? I've found Sinclair Ferguson's books to be edifying. A list of them would be helpful.

  5. It turns out that Know Your Christian Life: A Theological Introduction is the American edition published by IVP. The Christian Life: A Doctrinal Introduction was the title under which this book was printed in England. Banner of Truth has retained the European title for it's reprint edition.

IOW, yes, it's the same book.

I've begun to build a list of titles with links. I'll try to finish it up in the next couple of days. There are more titles out there that he has had a hand in than I realized.

  7. Andy,
Thank you for the link. I'm glad to see that he shared this talk with at the MACP. The other sessions look great, too. Did you get to attend?

  8. I did not get to attend but it looks to have been a great conference. I hope they make the sessions available on mp3.
