Great Books: Bargains Along the Way (Part 3)

Part Three -

It was in college that I was first bit with the bug of bibliomania.  I read for leisure in high school, for class requirements in college, and then gradually for devotional purposes.  It was in college that I realized how little I knew of God due to my own negligence.  I became increasingly hungry for knowledge of the scriptures and experience of the love and grace of Jesus Christ in my everyday life.

I frequented the campus bookstore trying to acquaint myself with the vast array of Christian literature, and bought a few inexpensive classics like Pilgrim's Progress, Of the Imitation of Christ and a few by E. M. Bounds and Andrew Murray.  I eventually found a shelf for second-hand books which were being sold at discounted prices.  I bought and resold a handful of books there.

By my final year of college I had located a couple of used bookstores in town and frequented them whether or not I had spending money.  If I wasn't purchasing books, I was learning authors and titles.  After graduating I began to travel back and forth visiting family and I began to break up my trips by searching out used bookstores and antique malls along the way.  To this day, I still practice this method of searching for bargains along the way.

During the Thanksgiving holiday this year we traveled northeast to Virginia Beach to visit with my family.  Along the way we stopped in a few places where we found great deals on good books.  Here's a list of the books and places we found.  (With respect to brick-and-mortar book shops selling new and used Christian/Theology books I will forgo the normal hyperlinks to online retailers for this post.  Please visit your local brick-and-mortar bookseller to discover what they are able to offer in person!)

The Christian Bookstore & Coffee House, Commerce, GA

There used to be a Christian bookstore located in one of the corners of the Tanger Outlet Mall, but it has since been closed.  However, we found The Christian Bookstore & Coffee House next to Five Guys Burgers and Fries.  We had an awesome lunch at Five Guys and purchased the following discounted titles at the bookstore:

• Quo Vadis, Evangelicalism? edited by Andreas Köstenberger
• Christ and Culture Revisited by D. A. Carson 
• A Long Obedience in the Same Direction Eugene Peterson - This is a second copy for me, but it is such a good book, I couldn't pass it up.  I'll give it away to someone.
• Girl Talk by Carolyn Mahaney & Nicole Mahaney Whitacre - I bought this one for my wife.

In South Carolina I didn't stop at any bookstores, but I did pick up two six-packs of my favorite soft drink: Blenheim Ginger Ale (especially the HOT).

Ollie's Bargain Outlet

Once we crossed into North Carolina I began to check my GPS for the nearest Ollie's along I-85 North.  We stopped in Gastonia at the first of many Ollie's stores during our trip.  We missed one along the way, but visited two more in Virginia Beach and Norfolk, and then a final stop in Rocky Mt., NC on the way home.  If you are wondering why a visit to one would not be enough, my answer is that you normally find different books at each store, especially when it comes to major commentaries.

My dealings with Ollie's is bitter-sweet.  Bitter because I have to be reminded that another Christian bookstore probably went under.  Sweet because the discounts are huge on brand new books.  Here's what I found:

• Moral Choices: An Introduction to Ethics (second edition) by Scott B. Rae
• Fire Someone Today by Bob Pritchett (President and CEO of Logos Research Systems, Inc.) - I began reading this book and it is excellent.  I recommend this for employers and employees alike.  Pritchett has provided me with a much needed perspective on business.
• A Guide to Christian Ambition by Hugh Hewitt
• The Call: Finding and Fulfilling the Central Purpose of Your Life by Os Guiness - This is excellent.  I've seen it recommended and had it on my Amazon wish list until now.  This is a must read.
• Reading the OED: One Man, One Year, 21,730 Pages by Ammon Shea - A few years ago I read two fascinating books about the making of the Oxford English Dictionary.  I'm looking forward to reading this one too.
• The Invitation: A Simple Guide to the Bible by Eugene Peterson - This, too, is a great entry level introduction to the Bible.  I'm hoping that it is something we can use in a small group or Sunday School class. (I bought two copies.)
• Fasting by Scot McKnight
• After You Believe by N. T. Wright
• Enthroned On Our Praise: An Old Testament Theology of Worship by Timothy M. Pierce
• Understanding Four Views on the Lord's Supper by Russell D. Moore, I. John Hesselink, David S Scaer and Thomas A Baima

Clemens & Co. Books - Hogansville, GA

Our final stop along the way was in Hogansville, GA.  This was our first visit here.  I thought there was a used bookshop in Newnan, GA, but this store came up in my GPS search results.  We were not disappointed.  Hogansville is a beautiful little town and Clemens & Co. is an equally beautiful antique, art, and book shop.  I learned that they price their books by section.  So, the Religion/Theology section was $6.50 for hardbacks and $3.00 for paperbacks.  This system was nice, but you have to be careful how you buy.  Here's what I found:

• Interpreting the Gospels edited by James L. Mays - The table of contents includes authors such as J. A. Fitzmyer, Robert Morgan, Paul J. Achtemeier, Howard C. Kee, Eduard Schweizer, Charles Talbert, Ralph Martin, D. Moody Smith, and Raymond E. Brown.
• I & II Samuel by Hans Wilhelm Hertzberg in The Old Testament Library series (a series I've found to be critical but helfpul)
• I & II Kings by John Gray in The Old Testament Library series
• Isaiah 40-66 by Claus Westermann in The Old Testament Library series
• Hosea by James L. Mays in The Old Testament Library series
• Amos by James L. Mays in The Old Testament Library series

Many have commented on AbeBooks' Most Expensive Sales in 2008 which is mind-boggling, but I love (and I'm sure you do, too) book deals even more. Here are a few that I found a couple of weeks ago, and the deals appear to be still available.

I have, at other times, seen volumes in the New International Biblical Commentary series marked down, but after reading a notice from Chad at The Road to Emmaus, I decided to give this series a closer look. Besides I had a $30 gift certificate to spend and I wanted to get the most bang for my buck.

From my experience the NIBC series is, like most series, hit-and-miss. In other words, while all of the volumes are more than likely very helpful, they probably would not be your first pick. However, many of these volumes will serve the majority of readers very well. As I have used Gerald Wilson on Job, Peter Davids on James, and Christopher Wright on Deuteronomy, I have found them to be similar in some respects and a bit more thorough than the Tyndale Commentary Series (which has been a long-time favorite series). I am very glad to have had this opportunity to become more familiar with this series because I have found a handful of useful volumes by very able commentators.

To this, it must be noted that whereas Hendrickson Publishers previously printed this series in hardback, all of the latest printings and some of the newest volumes are only available in paperback. CBD is offering a very nice selection of these commentaries in hardback at prices less than $5 a piece. Here are the ones I purchased:

ESV Bibles on Sale at Westminster Bookstore

Okay, so, NOW is the time to purchase an ESV Bible. Well, any time would be fine, but right NOW the Westminster Bookstore has discounted its entire line of English Standard Version (ESV) Bibles. All ESV Bibles are priced at 45% off list!

I just purchased two copies of the ESV Children's Bible (Hardcover). I missed out on the savings, but that is okay. The folks at Westminster Bookstore have been very accommodating to our blog. They have a fantastic selection, already low prices, excellent service, and a Christ-centered mission.

If you're trying to decide on an edition, let me suggest a few.

1. The ESV Literary Study Bible. This is more than a study Bible. The notes are superb and dove-tail nicely with the purpose of encouraging people to READ THE BIBLE. This is a great Bible to consider using as you start up a new year's reading schedule.

2. The Reformation Study Bible. This is full of excellent study notes. My wife has been using this edition and has found it to be VERY helpful.

3. I have been using the Classic Reference Bible edition. The cross-references are the best I've seen in any other Bible I've used! My only complaint is that the binding is adhesive rather than glued, however, the price is RIGHT.

4. On my WISH LIST is the Wide Margin Reference Bible. I haven't checked the binding, but, again, the price is EXCELLENT.

Klock & Klock Classic Reprint Library on ebay

I just found this listing and there isn't much time left, but WOW!!!!

If you are unfamiliar with the Klock & Klock Classic Reprint Library, you'll need to know that these are reprints of some of the best commentaries and theological books printed from Puritans to theologians/expositors of the early 1900's. Kregel, Baker, Wipf and Stock, and other publishing houses have reprinted some of these titles since, but very few match the durable quality of these volumes. Most, if not all (I forget), of these volumes were selected by Cyril Barber, the renown evangelical, bibliophile of the 20th century. They were printed between the years of 1975-1985.

I don't know the fellow selling these, but the auction is worth considering. His starting bid is stout, but considering what you're looking at, it's very fair. Take a look.

Here's a very nice lot of commentaries I found for sale on ebay. I would imagine that a college or seminary library would be the best home for these volumes (especially considering the value), but maybe one of my readers would be able to afford this. Maybe you know of someone who could. Anyway, I don't know the fellow selling these books, and I don't get any kickbacks for announcing this. But I couldn't pass up the opportunity to share this with you. What follows is from his description of the auction:

I decided to thin way down my Book of Job library which was quite extensive, and this is the result. It's is an awful lot of books on Job, but if you are building a comprehensive Biblical Studies library, personal or institutional, or just love Job, well then maybe this lot is for you. If the lot doesn’t sell this week, I will list the books individually next week. There are many rare works here, some almost impossible to obtain. Some titles I have only seen one copy of, and they are here. There are a number that would cost you from $50 to $200 each, if you could even find them for sale anywhere.

All have something profound to say about the marvelous book of Job, and the approaches and applications are nearly endless. No fluff here. Some are expositions and others explore the theology of suffering, the human condition, and God's ways with man - a little bit of everything. Commentators from the US, England, Canada, Scotland and Israel are represented here. The publication dates run from the 1840s to 2002, the majority being old and out-of-print. Most of the books are in Very Good to Excellent condition, with tight bindings and bright spine lettering (not ALL, but MOST)

It took me about 10 years and lots of $ to accumulate all these titles, and what I am offering them for here is less than half of what I paid for them. There are 100 volumes (99 titles), and almost all are hardbacks. The few paperbacks are towards the end of the list and are marked PB. Many of you have heard me speak of our "secret shelves" here at Banner in the U.S. - Obviously not so secret, these shelves are stocked with the ever-so-slightly damaged books that we offer at 50% discount to anyone who stops in. But wouldn't it be nice if we could make them available to others? Hmmmmm ... OK, so here's what we're going to try - Each Friday, I'll try to post a partial list of the books on those shelves, yours to buy at 50% off. There are some ground rules:

(1) First-come/first-served; with limited quantities, we might run out.
(2) The books are "slightly damaged;" if the damage is worse than "slight," I won't offer it.
(3) Shipping will be on you (sorry, but it is 50% off!).
(4) To order, you'll need to call or fax us your information; you won't find this on the normal Web site.
