Also, recommended by my dad, is Horton's The Gospel-Driven Life. We found a copy of this book during the Thanksgiving holiday and he bought it.  Since then, he shared a few highlights with me as he worked his way through it.  He liked it so much that he immediately looked for another Horton title to read.  My dad is a very particular reader.  He's not interested in anything that presents a watered-down gospel, nor an overly academic, heady gospel.  He delights in the biblical, simple, palatable, life-changing kind of gospel.  That's the gist of his description of Horton's book.

  • A strong emphasis on the scriptural basis for each doctrine and teaching
  • Clear writing, with technical terms kept to a minimum
  • A contemporary approach, treating subjects of special interest to the church today

Great Deal on Biblia Hebraica Leningradensia

These days, students of the Bible can access and perform intricate searches of ancient Biblical texts with software packages from BibleWorks and Logos Bible Software.  These tools are amazingly useful; but, thankfully, printed versions have not yet been obsoleted. AND, every once and a while someone offers a great deal on a print book.  For those of us who still love and use books in print, CBD is offering a fantastic deal on Biblia Hebraica Leningradensia.

Edited By: Aron Dotan
Hendrickson Publishers / 2001 / Hardcover

$12.99 for this weekend only

More Info | Product Close-up | Editorial Reviews | Table of Contents | Introduction | Chapter

Product Description:
The most accurate edition of the Leningrad Codex in print, the Biblia Hebraica Leningradensia presents a thoroughly revised, reset, and redesigned edition of the Hebrew Bible meticulously prepared by renowned masoretic scholar Aron Dotan.

The BHL includes features that suit it for research, classroom, and liturgical use. Scholars will find this a welcome edition of the Leningrad Codex, the oldest complete manuscript of the Hebrew Bible, whose text and layout it precisely follows. A foreword and five appendices provide the researcher with important details and distinctions about the codex. In addition to being a scientific edition, it was originally commissioned in Israel to follow the necessary adaptations that qualify it for Jewish liturgical use, such as divisions into weekly portions and their subdivisions for synagogue reading. Students, too, will find here an ideal text for classroom use, with an uncluttered format and printing that is matchless for its readability.
BTW, A Reader's Hebrew and Greek Bible (the combined version) is now available from Zondervan.  I've commented on the individual editions, and you can find those posts under the Biblical Languages label.

Calvin the Interpreter

A while back I spent some gift money to purchase Baker Academic's Dictionary for Theological Interpretation of the Bible, edited by Kevin J. Vanhoozer, Craig G. Bartholomew, Daniel J. Treier, and N. T. Wright (2005) [see this post for more details about this volume]. I have not been disappointed!

This evening my eye caught the article on John Calvin by John L. Thompson (Fuller Theological Seminary). I found this article to be focused, well-balanced and constructively critical. It is focused on Calvin as an interpreter of Scripture. It is well-balanced and constructively critical in that it presents the strengths of Calvin's approach to biblical interpretation in light of his historical setting (i.e. Renaissance humanism) and his attempt to maintain an appropriate balance between literal and allegorical interpretation. It also cautions the modern reader with regard to Calvin's methods and rhetoric which have lead some to the extremes of "Protestant triumphalism."

I would like to share a few highlights from this article with you:
Thompson argues that, when interpreting Scripture, Calvin was concerned with "how to ascertain an author's meaning and how to communicate that meaning persuasively." (96)

"Calvin attempted to write commentaries with 'lucid brevity'; unlike many of his contemporaries, he usually succeeded. But this particular principle was much more than a plea for clear prose; it was also expressive of his commitment to exegesis in service of the church, including the laity." (96, emphasis mine)

"His goal of lucid brevity was strategically supported by reserving what could have been lengthy theological digressions--loci communes, commonplaces--for his oft-revised Institutes. The work is integrated far more closely with his commentaries than modern editions make known." (96)

"[F]or Calvin the final authority of Scripture by no means warranted neglect of earlier commentators or theologians. Calvin elsewhere went so far as to insist that these ancient writings (Augustine and Chrysostom took pride of place) were providentially arranged aids for our own reading of Scripture, and we would be ingrates to neglect them." (96, emphasis mine)

With that in mind, the joining together of Calvin's Commentaries and Institutes by Baker Publishing was a great idea. The Institutes should have been included in the set from the get-go. This weekend, you can purchase this set at a discounted price at Christian Book Distributors . Take a look! This is a set you ought to have on your shelf, if you can afford it.

Great Book Buys at CBD

Many have commented on AbeBooks' Most Expensive Sales in 2008 which is mind-boggling, but I love (and I'm sure you do, too) book deals even more. Here are a few that I found a couple of weeks ago, and the deals appear to be still available.

I have, at other times, seen volumes in the New International Biblical Commentary series marked down, but after reading a notice from Chad at The Road to Emmaus, I decided to give this series a closer look. Besides I had a $30 gift certificate to spend and I wanted to get the most bang for my buck.

From my experience the NIBC series is, like most series, hit-and-miss. In other words, while all of the volumes are more than likely very helpful, they probably would not be your first pick. However, many of these volumes will serve the majority of readers very well. As I have used Gerald Wilson on Job, Peter Davids on James, and Christopher Wright on Deuteronomy, I have found them to be similar in some respects and a bit more thorough than the Tyndale Commentary Series (which has been a long-time favorite series). I am very glad to have had this opportunity to become more familiar with this series because I have found a handful of useful volumes by very able commentators.

To this, it must be noted that whereas Hendrickson Publishers previously printed this series in hardback, all of the latest printings and some of the newest volumes are only available in paperback. CBD is offering a very nice selection of these commentaries in hardback at prices less than $5 a piece. Here are the ones I purchased:
Other volumes listed at the same low price are as follows (I didn't purchase these because I am not as familiar with the authors):
Two other books I picked up at excellent prices are:
  • Brevard S. Childs, Biblical Theology: A Proposal (a small paperback booklet) for $1.49. (I've been wanting to read this little booklet for some time now.)
  • Craig Bartholomew, Mary Healy, Karl Moller & Robin Parry (eds.), Out of Egypt: Biblical Theology and Biblical Interpretation for $6.99. (I cannot tell why they have marked this at such a low price, considering the content and the fact that two other volumes in this series are marked at $16.99 each. Whatever, the reason it is a fantastic deal.)
Check them out! And if you find any other great deals, please pass a note to us.
